An even horizontal line, roughly 600mm to 1.2m above the floor, on a ground-floor wall. It marks where the water stops climbing and starts evaporating. Condensation does not produce a level line like this.

Merewether takes salt from two directions. Groundwater brings it up through the wall the way it does anywhere, and the southerly carries more in off the ocean and lays it on the outside. Salt is hygroscopic, so a Merewether wall can read damp in a dry spell simply because the salt in it is pulling moisture from the air. Surface damage here is often well advanced before anyone calls it damp.
Merewether mixes Federation brick, interwar bungalows and post-war brick veneer, and the elevated streets behind the beach are cut into the hillside. A cut-in house has one wall retaining soil whether or not it was ever built to. That wall reads as rising damp on a meter and is not — it is lateral damp, it appears higher up, and a damp course will not touch it.
Being this close to the ocean loads every wall with salt from the outside. Onshore wind carries it, it settles in the render, and salt is hygroscopic — it draws moisture out of humid air on its own. A Merewether wall can therefore read damp with no groundwater involved at all, which is why replastering with a salt-retarding system matters more here than the injection does.
Newcastle gets a little over 1,100mm of rain a year. Much of it falls in short heavy bursts. East coast lows and summer storms drop more in a few hours than the drains were built to carry. Water arriving that fast does not soak in evenly. It runs off, and it ponds against whatever is in its way. It then sits in the soil around and under the footings for weeks, long after the street looks dry.
Readings up the wall, then outside: levels, the rear lane, paving, downpipes, and whatever render or paint is already stopping the wall breathing.
Stepped cracking points at ground movement, not moisture. In a Mine Subsidence District that is a different call and possibly a compensable one.
Ground above the damp course is the fix, not a second damp course below it. Injecting under a bridge changes nothing and you will have paid for it.
Salt left in the render pulls moisture out of the air on its own. A wall with a perfect new course and its old plaster still reads damp, and the owner assumes the course failed.

An inspection works out which problem you actually have. Most of them are cheaper to fix than the one everyone assumes.
There is no licence called damp proofing. The one that matters is waterproofing, and it is worth two minutes to check.
A chemical course is a barrier injected into the mortar line. It is right when there is no working damp course, and wrong when there is one that has been buried.
Does the crack through your brickwork step down the mortar joints? That points at ground movement, not moisture. It also changes who you should be ringing.
Two things move a Newcastle quote more than anything else: whether the wall is shared, and whether someone has already sealed it with a cement render or a plastic paint. Undoing a well-meant repair is common in the inner suburbs and it is not free, so the honest range is wider than most sites will admit to.

A damp course is a waterproof layer built into a wall, just above the ground. It stops water climbing any higher. Older Newcastle houses were built with slate, lead or bitumen. Newer ones use plastic. A damp course can fail with age, or be bridged, which means water found a way around it.
Yes. The most common cause in a newer house is that the ground outside has ended up higher than the damp course. A concrete path, a garden bed, a slab or a re-levelled yard will do it. The water walks around the barrier. This is usually the cheapest kind to fix, because the fix is outside the house.
Damp walls grow mould. NSW Health says mould and damp indoors are linked to coughing, wheezing and asthma symptoms. It affects children, older people and people with asthma the most. Cleaning mould off the surface does not fix it while the wall is still wet.
