Stockton is a sand spit with water on three sides, so it gets the coastal salt load in its purest form plus a water table that is never far down. The older brick here suffers surface damage — crumbling mortar, blown brick faces — that can be advanced long before anyone describes the wall as damp.
Stockton is mostly single-storey — brick, fibro and weatherboard cottages on a sand spit, built low and built simply. Sand drains freely, so classic rising damp from a high water table is less common here than people expect. What is common is salt, and salt does the same visible damage on a wall that damp does.
No suburb in Newcastle is more exposed. Stockton takes ocean on one side and harbour on the other with very little between, and the air carries salt constantly. Salt collects in render and brick faces, draws moisture from humid air by itself, and crystallises behind paint until the surface blows off. On a Stockton job the replaster is usually the main event and the damp course is the afterthought, which is the reverse of everywhere else on this site.
Newcastle gets a little over 1,100mm of rain a year, and it does not arrive politely. A large share of it falls in intense bursts — east coast lows and summer storms that drop more in a few hours than the drainage was ever built to carry. Water that arrives that fast does not soak in evenly. It runs, it ponds against whatever stands in its way, and it charges the soil around and under footings for weeks after the street looks dry.

A chemical course is a barrier injected into the mortar line. It is right when there is no working damp course, and wrong when there is one that has been buried.

Prices are indicative ranges only. A terrace with a shared wall, a heritage-listed facade and an ordinary inter-war cottage all cost differently to treat, and every fixed price follows an on-site assessment.
The physical work is usually a few days. The wall then dries for months. Any finish applied before it has dried will fail, which is why the sequence matters more than the speed.
